Role Summary
The Process Architect will be part of the AES Process Technology team and will specialize in the design of highly technical facilities integrating various process platforms and scales in the business case/feasibility development (FEL-1) & conceptual phases (FEL-2), reporting directly to the Director of Process Architecture. On the AES team, you will be supported in your professional development, challenged in highly critical and rewarding complex projects while being encouraged to participate in a broad spectrum of opportunities to grow beyond your primary responsibilities.
The Process Architect will collaborate daily along with the Director of Process Architecture executing an established project conceptual design process, participating in thought leadership materials and marketing opportunities to promote the Compass program and the AES brand. A primary responsibility will be guiding clients/end users through the conceptual design process, managing interdisciplinary and departmental project coordination while communicating project requirements. You will enjoy problem-solving and the discovery of creative solutions, finding the unique response to challenging client requests and project requirements.
Furthermore, you will be responsible for fostering a collaborative and learning environment for personnel development and between architects, engineers and designers among other departments. This includes attending external industry training platforms to broaden your knowledge base and creating opportunities for internal cross-disciplinary educational sessions. Staying update-to-date with current regulatory requirements, cGMPs, industry trends and advancements in process design and equipment is a key component to the advancement of the Process Technology team. Our focus is on advancing design acumen, representing a core technical resource of the AES team, and presenting clients with the highest quality and innovative designs meeting stringent regulatory requirements as a crucial foundation to their projects.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Process Architectural Design:
- Implements code compliance with applicable codes, cleanroom design standards, and industry cGMP guidelines in the conceptual design
- Develop process architectural design concepts with the Director of Process Architecture stemming from the understanding of client’s processes, production and equipment requirements inclusive of the highest cleanroom design standards and industry cGMPs
- Problem-solving skills with iterative design charettes
- Assess and implement industry regulatory requirements with leadership from the Director of Process Architecture
- Execute process architectural design concepts and create documentation deliverables per AES Process Technology Standards including process equipment arrangements, HVAC classification diagrams, GMP flow diagrams, interior perspective renderings and design reports
- Translate process architectural design concepts to broader cleanroom facility design scope to support the Architectural, Mechanical Engineering and Pre-Construction departments
- Support project detailed design & construction estimate development with the Pre-Construction department
- Participate in the research and selection of process architectural system components
Project Management
- Project management skills in balancing project design schedules, following project budgets and change control processes for successful project delivery
- Strong client interface experience to communicate in speaking, writing and graphically
- Strong communication skills including speaking, writing and graphic communication for leading interdisciplinary collaboration and supporting client interface
- Exceptional time management skills for the ability to execute multiple projects concurrently
- Proactively and regularly communicates with the Director of Process Architecture to ensure successful project delivery and discuss any project or client challenges
- Assist in Compass design proposal development and business acquisition with the Director of Process Architecture
- Ability to travel for projects as necessary to support the project delivery
Continuous Improvement/Thought Leadership:
- Participate in industry training seminars/webinars and attend trade shows with Director of Process Architecture
- Support the development of though leadership materials alongside the Director of Process Architecture
- Focused on increasing technical acumen, participation in industry educational opportunities to enhance your process architectural design experience and expand knowledge of process equipment and technologies
- Contributes to the creation of internal interdisciplinary education presentations with the Director of Process Architecture
- Support AES Corrective and Preventive Action and Continuous Improvement Processes as it relates to process architectural design and deliverables.
Quality Assurance:
- Execute the established quality management process into each project.
- Participate in project quality reviews.
- Implement best practices for process architectural design and cleanroom design principles with the Director of Process Architecture.
Leadership, Mentorship, and Team Management
- Act as client facing leader on projects including acting as critical resource and knowledge-expert of cleanroom design.
- Leads the interdisciplinary conceptual design team in design coordination and scope cleanroom scope definition
- Identify opportunities for improving efficiency, scalability, and reliability and communicate ideas to Director of Process Architecture for consideration and implementation.
- Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
Qualifications: Education and Experience (Required and Preferred)
- Bachelor of Architecture degree from accredited program at a minimum, Master of Architecture preferred
- Minimum 7 Years of experience in Architectural & Engineering (A&E) required; Architectural, Engineering and Construction Management (AECM) firm preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Project Architect role as a licensed architect
- Professional Licensure required (multiple states a plus)
- NCARB Certification preferred, LEED Certification a plus
- Highly experienced in the design, coordination and construction of life-science facilities
- Proven track record of successful delivering architectural projects from concept through construction administration with time spent on construction sites
- Design portfolio available to present samples of greenfield and renovation projects with diversity of scales and process platforms
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of cleanroom mechanical, automation and monitoring systems for integration and coordination into the process architectural design
- Working knowledge in building design and construction, programmatic design principles and awareness of regulatory requirements (US-FDA, EU EudraLex, USP, cGMP, etc.) specifically for life-science facilities
- Detailed knowledge of cleanroom modular design and construction required, knowledge of the AES system a plus
- Familiarity with various process platforms and equipment technologies such as ATMPs, sterile bulk manufacturing and fill finish, bulk biologics, OSD, compounding pharmacy, and medical device manufacturing
- High technical proficiency in Revit, Microsoft Office, and other related design and rendering software
- Self-motivated and driven to complete efforts independently.
- Advanced experience in leading projects, project planning, design team coordination & communication, schedule management, and client coordination
- Advanced facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Assessment skills for existing client facilities to determine impacts of proposed projects
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills (written and verbal); strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients
